Weddings at Shaughnessy
Congratulations on your forthcoming
marriage! Our staff are pleased
to have a part in your wedding and the important preparations.
Please call the Office Administrator (Sue
Zhu) at 604-261-6377, ext. 12 if you are interested
in holding your wedding service at SHUC.
Preparing for your marriage at
SHUC
- A marriage license is required and needs
to be applied for in the 90-day period before the
wedding date. The license can be arranged by calling
BC Government offices (604-660-2937)
- The license is to be brought to the church office
at least two weeks before the wedding.
- It is the policy of the church not to schedule weddings
on Sundays.
- The use of appropriate live music in consultation
with the organist is encouraged for the wedding service.
- We heartily encourage your attendance at worship
in the weeks preceding your wedding. We trust that
you will find that worship with this congregation
serves to enrich your wedding and your marriage. Sunday
services begin at 10:00 a.m.
Administration
Booking the church for your requested
date and time requires the consent of one of the ministers,
payment of a security deposit (a portion of which is
non-refundable), and your agreement to the church's
wedding policies. The deposit is applied towards the
overall fee.
Fees include church use, administrative
costs, organist, wedding coordinator and minister. Arrangements
for a soloist and any additional musicians must be made
through the organist.
A thank offering to support the
congregation's mission is welcome. Charitable donation
receipts are issued at the end of February.
If the fees present a financial
challenge to a couple, the officiating minister will
be pleased to talk with you about your particular situation.
The Wedding Coordinator
After the wedding date has been set and
appointments with the minister have been arranged, the
coordinator will arrange the remaining details of the
wedding with you. The coordinator will be available
to answer your questions, conduct the rehearsal, and
be present at the wedding to provide assistance and
direction. If you engage a wedding director, please
advise the church's wedding coordinator.

In Times of Bereavement
Shaughnessy Heights United Church is here
to support you and work with you in honouring your loved
one and in celebrating the love of God. This page provides
some practical information to assist you.
1. The Worship Service
The funeral or memorial service
a service of worship may be held in
the sanctuary or in the chapel. The chapel has a capacity
of 30 people. One of the ministers will develop the
service with you. The church organist is available
for consultation. At the service, the Memorials Coordinator
will look after practical concerns related to the
service. Special vocal music may be arranged with
the Director of Music.
2. Memorial Receptions
Memorial Receptions are held following
the worship service either in the Church Hall or the
Lounge. The capacity of the Lounge is 50 and the Hall
can accommodate 50-300. The Memorials Coordinator
will discuss arrangements with you. SHUC arranges
tea, coffee, orange juice, candles, serviettes and
the church silver tea services. Food, flowers for
the table(s) and any rentals are billed to the family.
The church will seek to meet all requests if time,
assistance and available space permits. Volunteer
assistants serve at the reception.
3. The Memorial Garden
The memorial garden at Shaughnessy
Heights United Church, located on the south side of
the church building, is a peaceful area surrounded
by flowers and trees for the interment of cremated
remains. It is available to members and adherents
of SHUC.
4. Memorial Gifts
Memorial gifts from family and
friends in memory of the deceased may be directed
to SHUC and/or its Endowment Fund. This Fund is managed
by a Board of Trustees and is used to support special
projects and needs for both the church building and
the ongoing ministry. Special gifts for cherished
purposes can also be received in consultation with
ministers and congregation leaders. Income tax receipts
will be issued in February to all persons making a
donation in excess of $10.
5. Helping you with your grief
The ministers and/or lay visitors
are available to you at any time. Please call the
church office and your request will be forwarded to
them immediately. To help you with your grieving,
the "Lower Mainland Grief Recovery Society"
is recommended. It is sponsored by the United and
Anglican churches and is located at St. Marys
(Kerrisdale) Anglican Church. Information about this
program is available through the ministers.
6. Information about Costs
Helping you in this stressful
time is the primary concern of the congregation, but
financial aspects are part of these arrangements.
For SHUC participants (members and adherents) there
is no cost for the use of the sanctuary or chapel
or for the services of the ministers.
Information about costs of various
aspects of Memorial Services and Receptions can be
obtained by contacting the church office.
