Steven Chambers
Minister

The Rev. Dr. Steven Chambers is the Lead Minister at Shaughnessy Heights United Church. Steven was recently minister at Chalmers United Church in Kingston, Ontario. Prior to that, he was Executive Minister of the Faith Formation and Education Unit of The United Church of Canada, overseeing the church’s national work in multi-age faith formation and the preparation of people for lay and ordered leadership. As the United Church’s officer for theological, doctrinal and biblical matters, Steven staffed the Committee on Theology and Faith, which produced A Song of Faith (2006).

Steven has had extensive involvement in developing ways to express partnership in God's mission, especially in cross-cultural contexts. He has taught in the area of mission, ecumenism and culture. His doctoral thesis, The Partnership Conversation, 'listened in' to ongoing conversation between two congregations which entered a 'twinning relationship' - St. James United in Simcoe, Ontario, and Webster Memorial United Church in Kingston, Jamaica.

With a keen interest in communication, Steven has worked at expressing the message of the gospel both inside the church and beyond it and has contributed to a variety of resources and publications. He is the author of This Is Your Church: A Guide to The Beliefs, Policies and Positions of the United Church of Canada (United Church Publishing House, 3rd Edition, 1993).

Ordained in 1983 by London Conference, Steven has served pastorates in Ontario at Atikokan (Riverview), Simcoe (St. James) and Mississauga (Erindale). Prior to serving as Executive Minister, Faith Formation and Education, he was General Secretary of the United Church’s Division of Ministry Personnel and Education from 1998 to 2002.

Pamela Jeffery
Children, Youth and Family Minister

Pamela JefferyPamela Jeffery started her ministry with us on September 1, 2007. She is excited about the opportunities for children and youth and their families to deepen their relationships with God in this community of faith. Pamela served in similar ministry at Shiloh-Sixth Avenue United Church, Royal Heights United Church and South Arm United Church during the past 16 years. She completed a Youth Ministry Certificate with BC Conference of the United Church of Canada in 1998. She is an accredited Godly Play Teacher and has worked with various congregations building Godly Play programs. Pamela brings a deep passion for finding a place where people can nurture their faith, connect the teachings of Jesus to their lives and be constantly reminded of their belonging to God.

Administrator

The administrator in the SHUC office, assists the ministerial staff and committee chairs to enable the work of the church to run smoothly and works alongside a committed group of volunteers who provide a warm welcome to those friends and strangers who phone in or visit SHUC during the week. The administrator is responsible for booking rooms required by church groups and community users, assisting the Memorials and Weddings Coordinators and many other administrative aspects in the life of this busy church.

Janet Livingstone
Accountant

Janet LivingstoneAs the SHUC accountant, Janet provides financial statements and detailed financial information for Committee Chairs on a monthly basis, issues cheques and monitors deposits. Janet produces year-end financial statements for the congregation and yearly income tax receipts. Janet currently works on Mondays as her time is spent being a mom and running or cycling with friends.

Harold Kruk
Resident Custodian

Harold KrukHarold has been the Resident Custodian for Shaughnessy Heights since January 2000. His diverse background includes the Christian Camping ministry, construction and renovations, working with behaviourally challenged children, teaching dyslexic children, playing the saxophone and playing sports.

Roy Campbell
Organist & Director of Music

Roy CampbellRoy holds a BA in religious studies and a BMus in performance from Acadia University where he began his studies with Friedrich Gmeiner. Under the auspices of the Canada Council he studied with Anton Heiller at the International Summer Organ Academy in Holland, followed by studies at Concordia University with Bernard Lagacé. He was assistant organist to both Wayne Riddell and Patrick Wedd at Montréal's prestigious Church of St. Andrew & St. Paul and has performed with l'Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal and l'Opéra de Montréal. Roy has given recitals in Canada, Japan, Germany and the UK. He is a founding member of the Shaughnessy Heights Music School where he maintains an active teaching studio, accompanies the Sanctuary Choir and directs the adult handbell choir of this church, the Spirit Ringers.

Ramona Luengen
Choir Director

Ramona LuengenAs a composer, Ramona Luengen is privileged to have had her works performed and recorded in North America, Europe, Australia, New Zealand and Japan. Her music has been broadcast on CBC, BBC, WDR (Germany) and the national radio stations of Denmark, Hungary, The Netherlands, Sweden and Spain. Luengen's Piano Concerto was premiered by Jane Coop and the CBC Radio Orchestra in 2006 to great critical and public acclaim. Her opera for young audiences, based on the Joy Kogawa novel Naomi's Road, has received over 150 performances in both Canada and the United States. In 1996 the Assocation of Canadian Choral Conductors named her large-scale Stabat Mater Choral-Event-of-the-Year and Composition-of-the-Year.
A sessional lecturer for twelve years (1995-2007), Luengen taught a variety of courses in composition, counterpoint, theory, choir and 20th century music appreciation at both UBC and SFU. She has been the Artistic Director of the renowned Phoenix Chamber Choir since 1995 which is presently the Choir-in-Residence at Shaughnessy Heights United Church. The Sanctuary Choir of this church has been conducted by Ramona since 2004 and has experienced a period of phenomenal growth in both numbers and musicianship in that time. From September through November of this year, while Ramona is on a well-earned sabbatical study leave in Europe, Sharon Schermbrucker and Nancy Rahn will act successively as interim choral conductors. We extend a warm welcome to both Sharon and Nancy and look forward to working with both of them.
