Ramona Luengen
Choir Director
As
a composer, Ramona Luengen is privileged to have had
her works performed and recorded in North America, Europe,
Australia, New Zealand and Japan. Her music has been
broadcast on CBC, BBC, WDR (Germany) and the national
radio stations of Denmark, Hungary, The Netherlands,
Sweden and Spain. Luengen's Piano Concerto was premiered
by Jane Coop and the CBC Radio Orchestra in 2006 to
great critical and public acclaim. Her opera for young
audiences, based on the Joy Kogawa novel Naomi's Road,
has received over 150 performances in both Canada and
the United States. In 1996 the Assocation of Canadian
Choral Conductors named her large-scale Stabat Mater
Choral-Event-of-the-Year and Composition-of-the-Year.
A sessional lecturer for twelve years (1995-2007), Luengen
taught a variety of courses in composition, counterpoint,
theory, choir and 20th century music appreciation at
both UBC and SFU. She has been the Artistic Director
of the renowned Phoenix Chamber Choir since 1995 which
is presently the Choir-in-Residence at Shaughnessy Heights
United Church. The Sanctuary Choir of this church has
been conducted by Ramona since 2004 and has experienced
a period of phenomenal growth in both numbers and musicianship
in that time. From September through November of this
year, while Ramona is on a well-earned sabbatical study
leave in Europe, Sharon Schermbrucker and Nancy Rahn
will act successively as interim choral conductors.
We extend a warm welcome to both Sharon and Nancy and
look forward to working with both of them.
