Music

Sanctuary Choir / Youth Choir / Songsters / Handbell Choir

Music is integral to the life of the congregation. The core music program is singing in worship — a means of both expressing the faith and of experiencing the gift of the Spirit. Other music programs include the Sanctuary Choir (adults), Youth Choir, directed by Joy Bruce, and the Songsters. A new Handbell choir is being formed. All are welcome to participate in any of these music programs! Key contacts: Cathy Pedersen, Music Director and Roy Campbell, Organist.

Sanctuary Choir

With Cathy Pedersen directing, the Sanctuary Choir provides music for most Sunday services as well as special services during Advent, Christmas and Lent. Rehearsals take place on Thursday evenings from 7:30-9:30 p.m. in the lounge, with a break for refreshments (these have become legendary!) No audition is required, but you should love to sing, feel comfortable singing mixed parts in a group and able to commit the time. There are also occasions for more limited time commitment (e.g. 6 — 8 weeks). For more information contact Cathy Pedersen at music@shuc.bc.ca. New members are always welcome!

Youth Choir

Led by Joy Bruce, this group sings for services 6-8 times a year, as well as joining the Sanctuary Choir to present the special seasonal services. The age level is 10 years and older. Rehearsals take place at 9:00 a.m. on Sunday mornings. Boys and girls are welcome!

Songsters

This group, led by Cathy Pedersen, is the youngest choir in our church and often the most enthusiastic performers! They sing for services 4-6 times a year and join the other groups for some of the seasonal services. Their ages are 5 years and older. They practice on Sunday after the worship service is over, until about noon. Girls and boys are welcome!

Handbell Choir

Shaughnessy’s newly formed handbell choir will soon make its debut in the musical life of the congregation. The historical foundation for handbell ringing can be traced back to the earliest Christian church. Bells are mentioned in the Bible in Exodus as part of Hebrew worship and are shown decorating the robes of priests. It’s a creative and innovative way to promote the ideal of corporate praise where every ringer must learn to work as one body that instills a spirit of fellowship and discipline - so much so that a handbell choir has been likened to a mirror of the church itself. If, as St Jerome once said, ‘bells are the voice of the church’, let us ring them loud and clear! For more information contact Roy Campbell at music@shuc.bc.ca or 604-685-8987
