Children's Ministry
We Believe:
- It is a privilege and a responsibility to
accompany children and youth on their journey of faith
and in their relationship with God.
- We are called to integrate and honour the
ministry of children and youth in our congregation
- We are called to create an environment that
is supportive of children, youth and their families
- Shaughnessy Heights United Church provides
opportunities for children and youth to deepen their
relationship with God and to understand and live out
the role as disciples of Jesus Christ

United Church for Children and Youth
Worship
Typically, our entire congregation worships together
for the first 15 minutes of worship. The children and
youth leave after the Time with the Children. Children
and youth take a leadership role in worship as they
are able. Any child who would like to participate in
worship leadership should speak to Pamela Jeffery or
Gordon How.
Periodically, our congregation will be together for
the entire Sunday morning worship. These intergenerational
worship services are just that, services that connect
the story of our faith with all ages.
Nursery Aged Children
Children under the age of three and their parents are
welcome to use the Nursery Space at the back of our
sanctuary in the narthex. This allows for the children
to play and the parents to still be connected to what
is happening in our worship service. As of June 2008,
there will be Sabbath bags available for children under
5 - these bags are full of quiet toys and activities
to do during worship.
Children and Youth
After the Time with the Children in worship, children
and youth are invited to go out and participate in age-appropriate
programs. As of Fall 2008, all of our children (except
our Youth Class) will participate in the Godly Play
program.
What is GODLY PLAY?
Godly Play is a method of Christian education and spiritual
direction primarily for children ages 2-12. The goal of
Godly Play is to teach children the art of using religious
language, parable, sacred story, silence and liturgical
action to sense God's presence around them and in their
lives. It is an amazing and enriching blessing to see
children connect with their faith in such a deep and significant
ways.
Our Sunday School consists of four classes:
" Preschool/Kindergarten Friendship Circle welcomes
3 and 4 and 5 year olds.
" Grades 1-3 Friendship Circle
" Grades 4-7 Friendship Circle
" Youth: Grades 8-12
