News!!!!

Hello Everyone!

As we gather …

Pentecost, with its strange story of the Spirit descending upon the apostles in tongues of fire, is an ancient tale with a contemporary ring: when all around change is swirling, creativity and courage may be called for.

Biblical scholar David Lose, recalling a documentary about the late Steve Jobs of Apple fame, was moved by Jobs’ honest statement that the most significant moment in his life came when he realized that "reality" wasn't a given but rather was constructed by a previous generation – people really no smarter than the current one. So he started asking “what might be” instead of being content with “what is”. At Pentecost, it might be time to reflect on that learning in the church. What might be the future ways of the gospel for me, for us?

Reading: Acts 2: 1-21

Sunday, May 27 Pentecost

10 am Worship

The Zing! Children’s Choir joins the Sanctuary Choir as we celebrate Pentecost. Following worship, please join us for a Soup and Bun Light Lunch in the Hall. The children of the congregation will have a Cookie Sale. Come by their table to purchase a cookie and help to support children in the Congo. Église du Christ au Congo brings together 64 Protestant denominations. The democratic republic of Congo is plagued by conflict and large-scale displacement of people. Children are particularity vulnerable in situation of conflict and turmoil. Many children are left orphaned. Families are sometimes unable to care for their children because of the trauma they have endured. Église du Christ responds to the spiritual, emotional and physical needs of children.

Looking ahead …

Sunday, June 3 - worship at Shaughnessy Heights will not take place so that people may attend the Annual Meeting of British Columbia Conference (at UBC) where Lauren Hodgson will be ordained to the ministry of Word, Sacrament and Pastoral in The United Church of Canada. There will be a bus to take people from SHUC to the door of the Memorial Gym at UBC. A sign-up sheet will be on the action table for this and we invite you to make a donation to assist with the cost. Your booking on the bus is needed by Monday, May 28.

On Sunday, June 10, Lauren will preach at SHUC and join in the celebration of communion. There will be a reception following the service and a presentation to Lauren.

The United Church Observer

Founded in 1829, The United Church Observer is the oldest continuously published magazine in North America and the second oldest in the English speaking world. It has won international acclaim for journalistic excellence and garnered more awards for writing than any other Canadian religious publication. Editor David Wilson says of his mandate for the publication in contemporary Canada: “We seek to offer the United Church and Canadians generally a church magazine that exceeds people’s expectations of church magazines. As we move forward into a new era and style of faith-based publishing, we are constantly mindful of the traditions into which we are anchored.”

Observer subscriptions for people in the congregation will be expiring soon. In order to avoid missing a copy we are working toward a Sunday May 13th deadline for renewals. The annual cost is $20 with cheques made out to SHUC. Please give your cheque to Brian Forster, or drop it off at the Church Office Please be sure to indicate any change of address. New subscribers are welcome!
